In 1896 James RICHARDS opened this shop with his wife Amy Sarah (BAKER) at 85 Camden Road in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. James RICHARDS (1866-1949) was from Hailsham and married Edwin BAKER's first daughter in 1895. He was a photographer who displayed his photos and picture postcards here, as well as, with Amy, they sold newspapers and lent books from The Camden Library at a penny a week.
In later life James RICHARDS wrote in the Sussex Dialect as Jim Cladpole. He was also a methodist preacher and writer with books such as a translation of the 23rd Psalm, "Bits From De Old Book" and "Bout Me or, My Ottybograffy." After James' death in 1949, their son Eddie and his wife Ethel continued to run the shop. The library finally closed in the 1960s. It is believed that the building now houses a hairdressers shop called 'Dorian Marsh.' MANY THANKS TO a Richards' descendant - Steve Richards - for this information. |
